When you are home using a Windows PC for some assignments, DO NOT use Internet Explorer. Many of the Web 2.0 tools we will be using do not work well with Internet Explorer and also Chrome and sometimes even Safari. Please use Firefox!

I suggest you download and install Firefox an use it as your primary browser for this class.

I will be using Firefox in class!!

Join the Kansas Educators Diigo site. Change the Alert Setting to weekly. I will “feed” you resources to add to your own Educational Resources website.

Next decide which social bookmarking tool you would like to use. Right now, Pinterest seems to be leading the popularity contest. And admittedly, I find myself using Pinterest most often. But you may choose, so, take a look at all three listed below before you decide which fits your personality and work ethic best.

You may use Pinterest, Delicious or even create your own Diigo group as well as follow the Kansas Educators Diigo.

  1. Pinterest: Pinterest is an online pinboard. Organize and share things you love. Not sure how effective Pinterest will be, but if you like it you are welcome to try it.

  2. Delicious: Social bookmarking in an organized way

  3. Diigo: Social bookmarking, but best of all a way for your teacher to share resources with you.

  • I suggest you change the alert setting, from immediately to either daily or weekly.

  • Joining this group will give you an email daily or weekly (depending on your alert setting) with all the resources that have been bookmarked by me and other members of the group, maybe even you!!

  • You should explore the resources in the email each time it comes.

  • Find the resources that interest you and then bookmark those resources in your Pinterest or Delicious.

  • By the end of the semester your should have not less than 250 resources and now it should be a habit and hopefully you have let go of traditional bookmarking in your browser that only saves bookmarks on your computer.

Now that you have spent a little time exploring Pinterest, and Delicious, choose one and create an account so you can use it to save, organize and keep track of resources shared during this course, other classes, as well as, resources you find.

  1. Pinterest requires an invite, so shoot me an email (ded318@gmail.com) and I will send you an invite. Make sure you install the Pin It button on your Firefox browser toolbar. Screen_Shot_2012-05-12_at_4.10.27_PM.png

  2. By the way if you already have a Pinterest account, just use it and add some educational board like Technology, Teaching, Classroom Ideas, etc.
  3. Delicious also will need to have the buttons installed on the Firefox toolbar. Screen_Shot_2012-05-12_at_4.09.40_PM.png

By the end of the semester your should have not less than 250 resources and now it should be a habit. This is an amazing way to keep track of educational resources to use in your teaching and learning.

for beginning your WP website

We will do this Day 2 in class, but if you want to get a head start, go for it....

1. Choose your Theme, remember you can change your mind later and as many times as you want. But eventually, you need to choose a theme and stick with it.

2. There are a few themes that are a bit funky and don't work properly, I will let you know if if you choose one of those.

3. Add your first post to your WP website on the About Me Page, see PDF below (Getting StartedWP Post) with step-by-step instructions..

4. Your first post will be About You, an introduction to who you are and it will be added to the About Me Page along with an appropriate photo of yourself.

5. The good news is............ once you learn to do this, you will know how to do 75% of what you will be doing over and over. again on your WP website.

Read this Getting Started with WP Post PDF.

It will walk you through what to do step-by-step.

Getting StartedWP Post

6. Next you will add a list of Links/Blogroll. Instructions are also in the PDF above (Getting StartedWP Post).

Make sure you take advantage of the tutorials listed above, some are step-by-step written and some are videos. I am sure there is at least one that fits your learning style.

iPad Users

Install the WordPress App on your iPad.

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/wordpress/id335703880?mt=8

Screen_Shot_2012-05-13_at_10.49.24_AM.png

It works great, I actually use it all the time for my Technology Bits, Bytes and Nibbles blog. But, I will tell you, it is easier to do the initial setup for your blog on an computer and then use the app for adding content.

Likely there is an app for the iPad that can mimic and substitute for practically everything we do. Some Free, some not, but there are solutions. I will do my best to make those app suggestions as we go along. And something you do from the web just like you would from a computer.

5. Fun with Text

  4. The topic for this second image should be teaching OR education OR school OR technology OR teachers OR your content area, OR....???? Something/anything related to education.

  5. Take a screen capture of your second design, this will give you another image that will be added to the same post/place on your WP website.

  1. Screen Shot 2011-12-30 at 10.30.59 AM.jpg

  2. Take some time and explore my blog completely. http://www.technologybitsbytesnibbles.info Dig around and dig deep into Technology Bits, Bytes & Nibbles.

  3. Starter questions and ideas to get to started and thinking........What did you learn, what did you discover on my blog, did any stories/resources surprise you? How could a blog like this help you as a classroom teacher, how will it help you as a future teacher? etc, etc.

  4. REFLECT!! Your writing should reflect scholarly thought and writing. This will be the first entry on your website/blog.

  5. Title the Reflection: Week 1: Technology Bits, Bytes & Nibbles

  6. I suggest you Subscribe to my blog via email, we will be using it off and on all semester. Although, it does mean you need to read it when it comes in your email each day. Teachers are life long learners and this will point you in the direction of learning more about technology in the classroom.

  7. You will write 2 reflections each week. There will be a NEW blog to read OR Podcast to listen to OR resources to explore each week, AND you will always write a reflection. Each reflection will be added to your blog with a specific title. Your reflections must use the assigned TITLE as requested in the assignment.

  8. Make sure all your writing is hyperlinked. That means it has live clickable links, like you are finding on this page. Always live links for everything you are talking about.

  9. How to make a Hyperlink in Wordpress: http://www.mcbuzz.com/wordpress/how-to-make-text-link-using-wordpress/

  10. Additionally, make sure all reflections and text on your WP blog include hyperlinks and at least one image that goes with the story. The easiest way to do this is by making a screen capture/shot. See the tutorials above for instructions on making screen captures.
